How to open HEIC files on Android

Most Android phones running Android 10 or newer can already display a .heic photo in Gallery or Google Photos, because Android added HEIF decoding in 2019. If yours shows a blank or broken image, the simplest fix is to open the file in your phone's browser and convert it to JPG here — it works on mobile, with no app to install and nothing uploaded.

HEIC support on Android depends on the phone and its photo app, not just the OS version. Google Photos and most stock Gallery apps decode .heic on Android 10+, but some older or budget devices, file managers, and third-party apps still can't, and will show a placeholder where the photo should be.

Because this converter runs in the browser, it doesn't care which phone you have. Open your mobile browser, tap to choose the .heic from your Downloads or storage, and save a JPG back to the phone. The photo is decoded on the device, so it never gets uploaded — which matters on mobile data and on a phone you share.

If you keep receiving .heic files from someone with an iPhone, you can also ask them to switch their camera to JPG, and the problem stops at the source.

Convert HEIC in your browserDrop your .heic files and get JPG, PNG, or PDF — converted on your own device, nothing uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can Android open HEIC files natively?
Android added HEIF decoding in Android 10 (2019), so most modern phones show HEIC in Google Photos and Gallery. Older phones and some third-party apps still can't, and show a blank image instead.
How do I open a HEIC on Android without installing an app?
Open your mobile browser, go to the converter, tap to choose the .heic from your storage, and save a JPG. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install and the photo stays on your phone.
Why does a HEIC I received show as a broken image on my phone?
The app you opened it in lacks a HEIF decoder, or your Android version predates HEIC support. Converting the file to JPG makes it readable in any app on the phone.
